Sjomannadagur

Sjomannadagur is a day honoring the role that fishing and fishermen have played in Icelandic history, celebrated in the coastal towns and cities of Iceland. Sailors take the day off, and the Seaman’s Union sponsors many events, such as competitions in rowing and swimming, tugs-of-war and sea rescue competitions. Celebrations begin with a church service and a trip to the local cemetery to honor sailors lost at sea. Afterward there are children’s parades, dances, outdoor cookouts, and bonfires in the evening. The proceeds from the day’s events go to the national fund that supports old seamen’s homes. Discuss

Blue Moon

Though the term is often used metaphorically to describe a rare event, a blue moon is actually, in astronomical terms, the second full moon within a calendar month or the third full moon in a three-month calendrical season that has four full moons. While most years have 12 full moons that occur approximately once a month, each solar year has about 11 days more than the lunar year. These extra days accumulate, and, every few years, an “extra” full moon appears. When is the next blue moon? Discuss

King Victor Emmanuel III had appointed Benito Mussolini prime minister in 1922 to avoid revolt, but, when war came, the two fought on opposite sides—Mussolini with the Axis and Victor Emmanuel with the Allies. Victor Emmanuel’s history with Mussolini made the monarch unpopular after the war, and he abdicated in favor of his son, who ruled for 40 days before the Italian Republic was created by a referendum. Whom did it exile until 2002? Discuss
