Clearwater County Fair and Lumberjack Days

This international lumberjack event attracts loggers from throughout the world to little Orofino, Idaho. Lumbering is a major part of Orofino’s economy; Lumberjack Days began in the early 1940s as a local contest and kept growing. The events begin on Thursday, a children’s parade is held on Friday, and the lumberjack events come on the weekend. The logging competitions include log birling, ax throwing, chopping, chain-saw events, a speed pole climb, jack-and-jill sawing, and a skidding, or weight-pulling, contest. Louise Arner Boyd (1887)

Boyd was an American explorer of Greenland and the Arctic and the first woman to fly over the North Pole. After the deaths of her parents and brothers, she inherited the family fortune and chartered the ship of famed explorer Roald Amundsen for a trip to the Arctic. 16th Street Baptist Church Bombing (1963)

Birmingham’s 16th Street Baptist Church has been an Alabama institution since 1873. During the civil rights movement of the 1960s, it served as an organizational headquarters, meeting site, and rallying point for blacks protesting racism in the South. Costa Rica Independence Day

On this day in 1821, Costa Rica achieved independence after having been ruled by Spain since the early 1500s. El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua also declared independence from Spain on September 15, 1821. Porfirio Díaz (1830)

Díaz supported Benito Juárez in Mexico’s war against the French, but when he lost to Juárez in the 1871 presidential election, Díaz charged fraud and led a revolt. After losing again in 1876, he led another revolt and became president. Though his rule was ruthless, it saw financial stability and the expansion of railroads and telegraph lines.
