Benin National Vodoun Day

Vodoun is an ancient, African, pantheistic religion. When it was brought to the Americas by African slaves, it was blended with elements of Christianity into what is known as “Voodoo.” The present African country of Benin, situated on the former kingdom of Dahomey, is known as a center of Vodoun culture. The day is celebrated throughout Benin with processions, Vodoun rituals, dances, and even an international film festival. The celebration’s central activity, however, is the re-enactment of the journey from the slave auction block in the center of town to the ships in the harbor. Discuss

Salo

Salo is often cited in European humor as a stereotypical staple of Ukrainian cuisine, analogous to the association of cheeseburgers with the US and bratwurst with Germany. The beloved traditional dish consists of smoked or salt-cured slabs of pork fatback, often flavored with paprika or garlic. It contains little to no meat and is usually consumed raw. It can also be rendered for use in cooking or chopped up for use as a condiment. What salo-based dish was invented as a joke? Discuss

Black Nazarene Fiesta

The largest festival in Manila, Philippines, held each year in honor of the Quiapo District’s patron saint, the Black Nazarene, a life-sized statue of Jesus carved from blackwood, whose shrine is located in Quiapo’s baroque church. The traditional nine-day fiesta begins on January 1, and features nightly cultural events, band concerts, and fireworks. On the last day of the festival, the statue’s translación and enshrinement in the church is commemorated by a procession of barefoot men pulling a carriage that holds the 200-year-old statue on the way to Calvary. Dürer's Rhinoceros

Based on secondhand descriptions, German printmaker Albrecht Dürer—who never actually saw a rhinoceros himself—made a woodcut of the exotic beast gifted to the king of Portugal in 1515. The image became wildly popular in Europe despite its inaccuracies, which include a horn on the animal’s back and rivets in its armor. The rhino that inspired the woodcut perished in a shipwreck while being sent to the pope, but not before the king arranged for it to battle an elephant. Which animal won? Discuss
