Cinnamon is a spice obtained from the dried inner bark of trees of the genus Cinnamomum, native to India, Sri Lanka, and Burma. It has been a favorite since Biblical times and was at one time more valuable than gold. To protect their monopoly on the valuable commodity, traders invented various tall tales about its source.
