The Color Wheel

A color wheel is an arrangement of hues around the circumference of a circle in the order in which they appear in the electromagnetic spectrum, with complementary colors placed opposite one another. A typical artists’ color wheel includes the primary colors blue, red, and yellow; secondary colors—green, orange, and violet—created by combining two primary colors; and tertiary colors, which combine the primary colors with adjacent secondary colors.
