Rammed Earth

Used in construction since ancient times, rammed earth is a building material made by compacting and drying a stiff mixture of earth and water. Some of the oldest forts in the Middle East and China were made from rammed earth, and it has been used in contemporary structures in Japan and Britain. Formed into blocks or walls, it has good insulating and fireproofing properties and makes strong, durable buildings. The material usually costs nothing.
